Typography and colour: the basis of a website that communicates
May 12, 2026 · 5 min read
Before a single photo or icon, the visitor has already read text and perceived colours. Typography and palette are the foundation everything else is built on, and they decide whether a site feels professional or improvised.
Typography: readability first
Choose at most two families (one for headings, one for body) and define a clear size scale. Mind line height and line length: comfortable reading retains far more than dense text.
Colour: hierarchy and contrast
The palette needs a brand colour, neutrals for text and background, and an accent for important actions. Always check contrast (WCAG AA) so everyone can read it, including in low light or with low vision.
Consistency across the system
Defining tokens (sizes, colours, spacing) and reusing them keeps the site consistent across every page and easy to maintain and grow over time.
